Cubic Polynomial

A cubic polynomial is a polynomial of polynomial degree 3. A univariate polynomial of this polynomial degree has the form f(x)=a_3x^3+a_2x^2+a_1x+a_0 with a_3!=0. An equation involving a cubic polynomial is called a cubic equation. A closed-form solution known as the cubic formula exists for the solutions of an arbitrary cubic equation.

Dividing by the leading coefficient gives a monic polynomial, which can be written as

 f(x)=x^3+ax^2+bx+c.

For real coefficients, the polynomial discriminant

 D=a^2b^2-4b^3-4a^3c+18abc-27c^2

determines the number of real roots. If D>0, there are three distinct real roots. If D<0, there is one real root and a nonreal complex conjugate pair. If D=0, all three roots are real, counting multiplicity, and at least two coincide (Trott 2006). The root is triple iff b=a^2/3 and c=a^3/27, in which case f(x)=(x+a/3)^3. Otherwise, when D=0, there is one double root and one simple root.
