Cramér's V


Cramér's V is a measure of association between two categorical variables based on a contingency table. For a table with r rows, c columns, sample size n, and Pearson chi-squared statistic chi^2, it is

 V=sqrt((chi^2)/(nmin(r-1,c-1))).

The normalization gives 0<=V<=1. A value of 0 corresponds to no observed association, while a value of 1 is attainable for complete association in suitable tables.

For a 2×2 table, Cramér's V equals the absolute value of the phi coefficient. As with other effect sizes, its interpretation depends on the table dimensions and application.
