Brown-Erdős-Sós Conjecture

The Brown-Erdős-Sós conjecture asserts that for each integer e>=3 and real number epsilon>0, every 3-uniform hypergraph on sufficiently many vertices n with at least epsilonn^2 hyperedges contains e distinct hyperedges whose union has at most e+3 vertices (Brown et al. 1973).

The case e=3 is the Ruzsa-Szemerédi theorem. The conjecture remains open in general (Conlon et al. 2023, Shapira and Tyomkyn 2025). The corresponding r-uniform formulation for r>=3 replaces the vertex bound by (r-2)e+3.

This is problem 1178 in the Erdős problems collection (Bloom 2026).
