Average


The average x^_ of a set of N values x_1, ..., x_N is the value defined by dividing the sum of the x_is by the number of values N:

 x^_=1/Nsum_(i=1)^Nx_i.

The average is commonly called "the" mean or, more precisely, the arithmetic mean.

A so-called moving average may be defined as a sequence of values obtained by taking averages of running subsequences of terms.
