Associated Graded Space

The associated graded space of a vector space V with an increasing filtration 0=F_(-1)V subset= F_0V subset= F_1V subset= ... is the direct sum of its successive quotient vector spaces,

 gr_F(V)= direct sum _(n>=0)F_nV/F_(n-1)V.

Its degree-n component records the elements introduced at filtration level n, modulo those already present at level n-1. In particular, if F_nV is finite-dimensional, that component has dimension dimF_nV-dimF_(n-1)V.

For a decreasing filtration F^0V superset= F^1V superset= ..., the corresponding convention is

 gr_F(V)= direct sum _(n>=0)F^nV/F^(n+1)V.

The associated graded module is the corresponding construction for a module, including a filtration induced by powers of an ideal. For Vassiliev invariants, the increasing filtration is by order at most n (Kneissler 1997).
