Anstee-Sali Conjecture

The Anstee-Sali conjecture predicts the asymptotic number of columns in a simple (0,1)-matrix avoiding a fixed submatrix F, where simple means that no two columns are equal and avoidance allows permutation of rows and columns. Write this maximum for n rows as forb(n,F). For the column product A×B, each column of A is stacked above each column of B. Let X(F) be the least number q such that every q-fold product of sufficiently large identity matrices, their binary complements, or upper triangular all-ones matrices contains F. The conjectured estimate is forb(n,F)=Theta(n^(X(F)-1)).

Anstee et al. (2026) refuted the conjecture. If C_4 is the incidence matrix of the cycle graph C_4 and 1_(r-2) is a column of r-2 ones, then, for r>=4,

 forb(n,1_(r-2)×C_4)=Theta(n^(r-1/2)).

For this forbidden matrix, X(F)=r, so the exponent is larger than the conjectured r-1. The forbidden pattern is detected by restricting columns to selected rows, not merely by finding an ordinary hypergraph subgraph.

Anstee et al. (2026) attribute discovery of the lower-bound example to GPT-5.6 Sol assistance in the underlying work. The mathematical claims were reviewed by the authors.
