Affine Maximal Equation

The affine maximal equation is the Euler-Lagrange equation of the affine area functional for a locally uniformly convex graph. For a smooth function u on an open domain in R^n with positive definite Hessian, put U=(detD^2u)(D^2u)^(-1) and w=(detD^2u)^(-(n+1)/(n+2)). The equation is

 sum_(i,j=1)^nU^(ij)partial_ipartial_jw=0.

The corresponding functional is int(detD^2u)^(1/(n+2))dx for compactly supported variations. Every quadratic polynomial with positive definite Hessian solves the equation, since w is constant. The affine Bernstein conjecture asks when complete solutions must be quadratic.
