23_4 Configuration

A 23_4 configuration is an abstract configuration of 23 points and 23 lines, with exactly four lines incident with each point and exactly four points incident with each line. Two distinct points are incident with at most one common line. A geometric realization represents these incidences by points and straight lines in the real projective plane, without adding incidences between the selected points and lines.

Lu (2026) constructed real geometric examples, settling the last unresolved order for geometric n4 configurations.

One example has homogeneous coordinates (1:0:0), (0:1:+/-1), (0:3:+/-2), (1:+/-1:0), (3:+/-2:+/-2), (2:+/-3:+/-2), (6:+/-1:+/-2), and (6:+/-5:+/-2) for its points. Its lines are x=0, y+/-z=0, 2y+/-3z=0, x+/-3z=0, x+/-2y+/-2z=0, 2x+/-6y+/-9z=0, 2x+/-2y+/-z=0, and 2x+/-2y+/-5z=0, where all sign combinations are taken independently (Lu 2026).

Lu (2026) also constructed an example defined over Q(sqrt(17)) but not over Q. The two examples are the only ones with a Vierergruppe of projective symmetries, up to projective equivalence. They are not the only geometric 23_4 configurations.
