Yang-Baxter Equation

The Yang-Baxter equation for a linear operator R:V tensor V->V tensor V, where V is a vector space over a field, is

 R_(12)R_(13)R_(23)=R_(23)R_(13)R_(12).
(1)

This is an identity of linear operators on the triple vector space tensor product V tensor V tensor V. Each R_(ij) applies R to factors i and j and leaves the remaining factor unchanged. Explicitly, R_(12)=R tensor I, R_(23)=I tensor R, and R_(13)=(I tensor tau)(R tensor I)(I tensor tau), where I is the identity operator on V and tau(u tensor v)=v tensor u interchanges the two factors (Etingof et al. 1999).

In the set-theoretic form, R:X×X->X×X is a map of sets, and the same equation is an identity of maps on X^3. Writing tau(x,y)=(y,x) and id for the identity function on X, the maps are R_(12)=R×id, R_(23)=id×R, and

 R_(13)=(id×tau)(R×id)(id×tau).
(2)

Composing R with the flip gives the braid convention r=tauR, which satisfies

 r_(12)r_(23)r_(12)=r_(23)r_(12)r_(23).
(3)

Invertibility and nondegeneracy are extra restrictions on a set-theoretic solution and are not imposed here.

An automorphism of a set-theoretic solution is a bijection f:X->X satisfying (f×f)R=R(f×f). Militaru (2026) proved that every group occurs as the automorphism group of such a solution, and a finite group can be realized on a finite set X. Militaru (2026) reports Claude assistance with mathematical constructions and proof development.
