Weak Membership Oracle

A weak membership oracle for a convex body K subset= R^n is an oracle that decides approximate membership with a specified tolerance tau>0 (Grötschel et al. 1988). Writing B for the closed ball of radius 1 centered at the origin, define

 K^(+tau)=K+tauB, and K^(-tau)={x:x+tauB subset= K},

where addition is the Minkowski sum. For a rational point x and a positive rational number tau, an affirmative answer certifies x in K^(+tau), and a negative answer certifies x not in K^(-tau). Either answer is permitted in the tolerance region between the two sets. This input model allows algorithms to work with a convex body without an explicit finite list of its defining inequalities.
