Tu-Deng Conjecture

The Tu-Deng conjecture is a bound on pairs of binary expansions with prescribed modular sum. For integers k>=2 and 1<=t<2^k-1, let wt(a) be the number of 1s in the binary expansion of a, and define

 S_(t,k)={(a,b) in {0,1,...,2^k-2}^2:a+b=t (mod2^k-1), wt(a)+wt(b)<k}.

The conjecture asserts that |S_(t,k)|<=2^(k-1) (Cusick 2026).

Cusick (2026) gives the equality characterization following proofs of the bound. If the k-bit expansion of t has z zeros, then |S_(t,k)|=2^(k-1) iff each cyclic distance between consecutive zeros is at least z, where the distance includes the final zero. In particular, equality requires z^2<=k. The number of equality words on labeled cyclic positions with exactly z zeros is

 N(k,z)=k/(k-z(z-1))(k-z(z-1); z)

when k>=z^2, and is zero otherwise (Cusick 2026).
