Tomihisa's Identity

Tomihisa's identity is the relation

 ax((fxb)x(gxc))
+bx((fxc)x(gxa))
+cx((fxa)x(gxb))=0
(1)

for any five real three-dimensional vectors a, b, c, f, and g, where x denotes the cross product (Aicardi 2010, p. 15). It also holds with the Poisson bracket on binary quadratic forms (Tomihisa 2009; Aicardi 2010, p. 15).

To prove the cross product identity, write [x,y,z]=x·(yxz) for the scalar triple product, and put D=[a,b,c]. The cofactor identity

 [h,b,c]a+[h,c,a]b+[h,a,b]c=Dh
(2)

holds for every vector h, including when D=0. Let S denote the left side of (1). Expanding its outer cross products using the vector triple product and applying the cofactor identity with h=g and h=f gives

S=fx(Dg)-gx(-Df)
(3)
=0.
