Thompson's Group V

Thompson's group V is the group of right-continuous bijections of [0,1) that are linear on finitely many half-open intervals with dyadic endpoints, have slopes that are integral powers of 2, and map dyadic rational points to dyadic rational points. A dyadic rational has the form a/2^b, where a and b>=0 are integers (Chaudkhari et al. 2026).

The group contains Thompson's group F and Thompson's group T. Chaudkhari et al. (2026) proved that V is a sofic group, which implies the same conclusion for those subgroups. Their presented proof of this stronger result was developed by the authors, after ChatGPT had produced an earlier, weaker argument concerning Thompson's group F.
