Subnormal


A subnormal is, in differential geometry, the directed line segment on the x-axis from the perpendicular projection of a point P=(x,y) on a plane curve to the point where the normal line at P meets the axis. If y^'=dy/dx is finite and nonzero, its directed length is

 N=yy^'.

In statistics, a set of trials having Lexis ratio L<1 is also said to be subnormal.
