Strong cosmic censorship is the assertion that generic initial data have maximal globally hyperbolic developments that cannot be extended at a specified regularity. The topology defining genericity and the regularity permitted for extensions are part of the assertion. A future extension contains the development as a proper open isometric image and allows a future timelike curve to reach its boundary. The ambient extension need not satisfy the original field equations.
