Strict Comparison

Strict comparison for a C^*-algebra is an order-detection property of its Cuntz semigroup using rank functionals. In the extended-functional convention, if x,y in Cu(A), the hypothesis is f(x)<=f(y) for every semigroup functional f, with strict inequality whenever 0<f(y)<infty. Strict comparison requires that these conditions imply x<=y. This convention retains zero and infinite target values. For a simple exact unital algebra the normalized-trace formulation compares positive a,b with b!=0 when d_tau(a)<d_tau(b) for every tracial state.

A C*-algebra is nonelementary when it is not isomorphic to the compact operators on a Hilbert space.
