Stein Degree

The Stein degree of a proper integral variety S over a field k is

 sdeg(S/k)=dim_kH^0(S,O_S).

The field of global functions is a finite extension of k and records the finite part of its structural morphism. For example, P_(k^')^1 viewed over a finite extension k^'/k has Stein degree [k^':k]. A stronger invariant uses the relative algebraic closure k_S of k in k(S) and has value [k_S:k]. For the normalization S^nu of S, this equals dim_kH^0(S^nu,O_(S^nu)).
