Sign Representation

The sign representation of the symmetric group S_n, for a positive integer n, is the one-dimensional complex group representation on C given by

 rho(sigma)z=sgn(sigma)z,

where sigma in S_n, z in C, and sgn(sigma) is the signature of the permutation sigma. Thus an even permutation acts as +1 and an odd permutation acts as -1. This is an irreducible representation; its group character is chi(sigma)=sgn(sigma) (Etingof et al. 2011).
