Serre's Intersection Multiplicity

Serre's intersection multiplicity of two finitely generated modules M and N over a regular local ring R of Krull dimension d is the alternating sum

 chi^R(M,N)=sum_(i=0)^d(-1)^il_R(Tor_i^R(M,N)),

provided their module tensor product has finite module length. Here l_R is module length, and Tor is computed over R. Regularity ensures that the Tor modules in degrees greater than d vanish. For nonzero M,N, the positivity conjecture asserts chi^R(M,N)>0 when dim_RM+dim_RN=d. The Krull dimension of a module is the supremum of dim(R/p) over prime ideals p at which its localization is nonzero.

For example, in R=k[x,y]_((x,y)), the modules M=R/(x) and N=R/(y^r) have chi^R(M,N)=r for every integer r>=1. Their module tensor product is k[y]/(y^r), of module length r, and their Tor in positive degrees vanishes.
