Ring of Sets

A ring of sets on a set X is a nonempty set R of subsets of X that is closed under union and set difference. Thus, if A,B in R, then A union B in R and A\B in R (Zusmanovich 2018, p. 2).

A ring of sets contains the empty set and is closed under intersection, since emptyset=A\A and A intersection B=A\(A\B). A ring of sets is an algebra of sets on X iff it contains X.
