Rectangle Folding

RectangleFoldingMinima

Rectangle folding is the operation of folding a rectangle along a straight line. One optimization problem asks which fold through the center minimizes the area covered by both halves. Let the side lengths be 0<a<=b. The minimizing shape changes at the aspect ratio a/b=T=0.81502370129163... (Gaichenkov 2023, pp. 1-6). For a/b<T, the minimum overlap is a triangle of area a^2/2, obtained by a fold at pi/4 to a side. For T<a/b<=1, the minimum overlap is a pentagon. At a/b=T, both shapes attain the same minimum area, as illustrated above. For a square, the optimal fold makes an angle pi/8 or 3pi/8 with a side and the minimum overlap area is (sqrt(2)-1)a^2 (Gaichenkov 2023, pp. 4-6).

For T<=r=a/b<=1, the pentagonal minimum occurs at an angle alpha=arctanu or pi/2-arctanu to a side of length b, where u is the smallest positive root of the quartic equation (Gaichenkov 2023, pp. 2-6)

 u^4-4u^2+(8r)/(1+r^2)u-1=0.

The threshold is obtained from the unique real root t=0.45913372331020753... (OEIS A366185) of the quintic equation

 t^5+3t^4+4t^3+t-1=0

using

 T=(1-sqrt(1-k^2))/k,

where k=(1+4t^2-t^4)/(4t).

The auxiliary root t admits a neusis construction (Gaichenkov 2026, pp. 2-3). In Cartesian coordinates, draw the line x=sqrt(2) and the circle with center (-1/sqrt(2),1/sqrt(2)) and radius sqrt(2). Slide a ruler with two marks one unit apart through the origin O so that the nearer mark P lies on the circle and the farther mark Q lies on the line, with P between the origin and Q. Choosing P below the x-axis gives OP=t. The formulas above then construct the threshold aspect ratio T from t.
