Recovering Pair

A recovering pair is a pair (A,B) of nonempty families of subsets of the same finite set such that A\B=A^'\B^' implies A=A^' and B\A=B^'\A^' implies B=B^' for every A,A^' in A and B,B^' in B. Each member of either family can therefore be recovered from its set difference with a member of the other family.

For an n-element ground set, Costa (2026) proved

 |A||B|<=((223949)/(100000))^n=(2.23949)^n.

The sandglass conjecture predicts the stronger bound 2^n. Costa (2026) states that ChatGPT generated initial versions of the retained proofs and computational code under his research strategy, and that he independently verified all retained claims.
