Quillen Conjecture

The Quillen conjecture asserts that contractibility of the order complex of the nonidentity elementary Abelian p-subgroups of a finite group G implies a nontrivial normal p-subgroup. Here p is prime, A_p(G) is ordered by inclusion, and its 0-dimensional simplices correspond to subgroups isomorphic to (Z/pZ)^r with r>=1. Writing O_p(G) for the largest normal p-subgroup, the implication is

 A_p(G) contractible ==> O_p(G)!={1}.

The converse holds as well.
