Quasi-Isometry

A quasi-isometry between metric spaces X and Y is a map f:X->Y for which there are constants K>=1 and C>=0 satisfying K^(-1)d_X(x,x^')-C<=d_Y(f(x),f(x^'))<=Kd_X(x,x^')+C for all x,x^' in X, and every point of Y is at distance at most C from f(X). The second condition is coarse surjectivity. A quasi-isometry need not be a bijection or preserve small distances.

Word metrics from different finite generating sets of the same group are quasi-isometric.

A group is virtually polycyclic when it has a polycyclic group as a subgroup of finite index.
