Projective Unitary Representation

A projective unitary representation of a group G is a map sigma:G->U(H) into the unitary operators on a complex Hilbert space for which

 sigma(g)sigma(h)=beta(g,h)sigma(gh),

where beta:G×G->{z in C:|z|=1} is a scalar 2-cocycle. For normalized data, sigma(e)=I and beta(e,g)=beta(g,e)=1. Associativity requires beta(g,h)beta(gh,k)=beta(h,k)beta(g,hk). An ordinary unitary representation is the case beta=1. A cocycle is of finite type if it admits such a representation with nonzero finite-dimensional H. Finite type does not require the image of the representation to be finite.
