Octahedron 2-Compound

Octahedron2Compounds

There are a number of attractive polyhedron compounds consisting of two octahedra. The first (left figure) consists of two octahedra rotated above a common C_3 symmetry axes. The second (middle figure) consists of two octahedra rotated above a common C_4 symmetry axes.

These compounds are implemented in the Wolfram Language as PolyhedronData[{"OctahedronTwoCompound", n] for n=1, 2, 3.

Octahedron2CompoundsAndDuals

These octahedron 2-compounds are illustrated above together with their cube 2-compound duals and common midspheres.

Octahedron2CompoundsIntersectionsAndConvexHulls

The common solids and convex hulls of these compounds are illustrated above.

Octahedron2CompoundC3Net

The net for the C_3 octahedron 2-compound is illustrated above. For octahedra with unit edge lengths, the side lengths are

s_1=1-1/2sqrt(2)
(1)
s_2=sqrt(1/2(3-sqrt(2)))
(2)
s_3=1.
(3)

The surface area of the compound is

 S=(45)/8sqrt(3)(2-sqrt(2)) approx 5.7072.
