Mumford-Shah Functional

The Mumford-Shah functional balances smooth approximation to data with the length of an edge set. For a bounded planar domain Omega, bounded real data g, a relatively closed set K of finite length, and u in L^2(Omega) intersection W^(1,2)(Omega\K), a normalization is

 F(u,K)=int_(Omega\K)||del u||^2dx+H^1(K)+int_Omega(u-g)^2dx.

The term H^1(K) is Hausdorff measure. Removing redundant pieces of K gives its reduced representative, the support of length measure restricted to K. The Mumford-Shah conjecture describes the geometry of this set for minimizers.
