Logarithmic Kodaira Dimension

The logarithmic Kodaira dimension kappa^_(U) of a smooth quasiprojective variety U over a field of characteristic zero is the Iitaka dimension of K_X+D on a smooth projective compactification X with reduced simple normal crossing boundary D=X\U. It is independent of such a compactification. The boundary allows logarithmic poles in pluricanonical forms. For example, kappa^_(A^1)=-infty, while kappa^_(G_m)=0 and kappa^_(P^1\{0,1,infty})=1.

For a projective surjective morphism f:U->V with connected fibers between smooth connected complex quasiprojective varieties, let F be the smooth projective geometric generic fiber. The variation Var(f) is the least transcendence degree over C of an algebraically closed subfield of C(V)^_ over which F has a birational model. It records the whole fiber function field, rather than only its canonical model.
