Local Level Set

A local level set of a Takagi-van der Waerden function is an equivalence class under a digit-based relation finer than equality of function values. Fix an integer r>=2 and write the base-r expansion of x in (0,1) as

 x=sum_(n=1)^infty(epsilon_n)/(r^n),

with epsilon_n in {0,...,r-1}, choosing the terminating expansion when there are two. Let a_n(x) be 1 when the fractional part of r^(n-1)x is less than 1/2 and -1 otherwise, and put D_n(x)=sum_(j=1)^(n)a_j(x).

Two points x and x^' belong to the same local level set iff, for every n>=1, |D_n(x)|=|D_n(x^')| and, whenever D_n(x)!=0, either epsilon_n=epsilon_n^' or epsilon_n+epsilon_n^'=r-1 (Jiang et al. 2026). Each such equivalence class is contained in a level set of T_r. When r=2, the digit condition is automatic, giving the classical definition for the blancmange function (Jiang et al. 2026).
