Lipschitz Extension Problem

The Lipschitz extension problem asks whether a Lipschitz function f:S->Y on a subset S of a metric space X extends to F:X->Y with controlled Lipschitz constant. A uniform extension factor K requires F|_S=f and Lip(F)<=KLip(f) for every S and f.

For a nonempty S and a real-valued L-Lipschitz function, McShane's extension (McShane 1934) is

 F(x)=inf_(s in S){f(s)+Ld(x,s)}.

It has Lipschitz constant at most L and agrees with f on S. Vector-valued targets can require a larger factor or fail to have a uniform factor.

Ball's problem for the target l_1 asks for a universal extension factor when X is a real Hilbert space and Y is the Banach space of absolutely summable real sequences with ||a||_1=sum_(j)|a_j| (Ball 1992, Mendel and Naor 2013).
