Length Metric

A length metric, also called a path metric, is a metric d on a set X for which d(x,y) equals the infimum of the lengths of paths joining x to y, with lengths measured using d (Birtea et al. 2008, p. 466; Lang 2013, p. 2).

For a path gamma:[0,1]->X, its length with respect to d is

 L_d(gamma)=sup_(0=t_0<...<t_n=1)sum_(i=1)^nd(gamma(t_(i-1)),gamma(t_i)),

where the supremum ranges over all integers n>=1 and all choices of t_0,...,t_n satisfying the indicated inequalities. A metric space equipped with a length metric is called a length space.
