Kakeya Maximal Function

The Kakeya maximal function at scale 0<delta<1 averages a function over thin unit-length tubes and takes the supremum over their translations in each direction. In R^3, for a in R^3 and a unit vector omega in S^2, put

 T_delta(a,omega)={a+tomega+u:|t|<=1/2, u·omega=0, ||u||<=delta}.

This cylinder has volume pidelta^2. It is defined by

 K_deltaf(omega)=sup_(a in R^3)1/(pidelta^2)int_(T_delta(a,omega))|f(x)|dx.

The output is a function of direction on the sphere S^2. The analogous definition in R^n uses volume v_(n-1)delta^(n-1), where v_(n-1) is the volume of the unit ball in R^(n-1). It satisfies K_delta(f+g)<=K_deltaf+K_deltag pointwise and K_delta(cf)=|c|K_deltaf.
