Kadison-Kastler Distance

The Kadison-Kastler distance between two operator algebras A,B subset= B(H) is the Hausdorff distance between their closed unit balls in the operator norm. Writing A_1 and B_1 for these balls, it is

 d_(KK)(A,B)=max{sup_(a in A_1)inf_(b in B_1)||a-b||,sup_(b in B_1)inf_(a in A_1)||a-b||}.

It measures two-sided closeness in the given representation. Restricting the approximants to the unit balls distinguishes this distance from the one-sided near inclusion of operator algebras. For example, d_(KK)(A,A)=0. The Kadison-Kastler conjecture concerns whether sufficiently small distance forces equivalence of the algebras.
