Jacobian Variety

The Jacobian variety of a smooth projective connected curve C is the abelian variety Pic^0(C) parametrizing degree-zero line bundles. Its dimension is the genus of C. For a chosen point p, the Abel-Jacobi map sends x to O_C(x-p). An elliptic curve is its own Jacobian, with its identity as base point (Milne 2008).
