Isoperimetric Profile

An isoperimetric profile gives the least possible perimeter of a set with a prescribed volume. For an open set U subset= R^n, its relative isoperimetric profile is

 I_U(v)=inf{P(E;U):E subset= U, V(E)=v},

where P(E;U) is relative perimeter and V is Lebesgue measure.

For the unit cube Q=(0,1)^3, Deng et al. (2026) reported

 I_Q(v)=min{(9pi/2)^(1/3)w^(2/3),sqrt(piw),1},

where w=min{v,1-v} and 0<=v<=1. Up to isometries of the cube, complementation, and changes on sets of measure zero, the minimizers are corner eighth-balls, edge quarter-cylinders, and coordinate slabs. The transitions occur at w=4pi/81 and w=1/pi, with both adjacent types minimizing at each transition (Deng et al. 2026).

Deng et al. (2026) report mathematical assistance from ChatGPT with proof strategies and calculations.
