Inferential Statistics

Inferential statistics is the use of data from a sample to draw conclusions about a larger population or an underlying probabilistic model. It includes point estimators, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing. The reliability of an inference depends on the sampling design, the model assumptions, and the sampling variability of the chosen statistic.

Inferential statistics is contrasted with descriptive statistics, which summarizes observed data without necessarily generalizing beyond them.
