Hitchin Fibration

The Hitchin fibration is the map from a moduli space of Higgs bundles to the space of characteristic polynomial coefficients of their Higgs fields. For stable rank-n bundles on a smooth projective complex curve C of genus g>=2 with fixed determinant of degree coprime to n and trace-free Higgs field, it is

 h:M_(Dol)^L(SL_n)-> direct sum _(i=2)^nH^0(C,K_C^( tensor i)).

The coefficient of degree one vanishes because the field is trace-free. Writing g for the curve genus and R=(n^2-1)(g-1), this proper map has base dimension R and total-space dimension 2R. Its perverse Leray filtration is compared with character-variety weights in the P=W conjecture.
