Graded Completion

The graded completion of a nonnegatively graded vector space V= direct sum _(n>=0)V_n is the direct product

 V^^=product_(n>=0)V_n.

Its elements are formal sums sum_(n>=0)v_n with v_n in V_n. In the direct sum V, only finitely many components of an element may be nonzero. No analytic convergence is required for an element of V^^ (Chmutov and Duzhin 2005, p. 2).

If V is a nonnegatively graded algebra, its multiplication extends to the graded completion by the rule

 (ab)_n=sum_(i=0)^na_ib_(n-i).

Every component of this product is a finite sum. For example, the Kontsevich integral takes values in a graded completion of an algebra of chord diagrams.
