Golden Gasket

GoldenGasketConstruction

A golden gasket is a self-similar fractal generated by three similarities centered at the vertices of an equilateral triangle, with a specially chosen common contraction ratio (Broomhead et al. 2004). For an integer m>=2, let lambda_m be the unique positive root of

 lambda_m+lambda_m^2+...+lambda_m^m=1.
(1)

If p_0, p_1, and p_2 are the vertices, define

 f_i(x)=lambda_mx+(1-lambda_m)p_i
(2)

for i=0, 1, and 2. The golden gasket K_m is the unique nonempty compact set satisfying

 K_m=f_0(K_m) union f_1(K_m) union f_2(K_m).
(3)

The left and right panels show seventh-step approximations to the Sierpiński sieve with contraction ratio 1/2 and to K_2, respectively. The middle panel shows the three first-step images for m=2, with their pairwise overlaps in orange and the central hole outlined.

Different compositions can define the same map, with f_i degreesf_j^m=f_j degreesf_i^m for i!=j, where the powers denote repeated composition. The Hausdorff dimension and capacity dimension of K_m are

 dim_HK_m=dim_(cap)K_m=(lntau_m)/(lnlambda_m),
(4)

where tau_m is the smallest positive root of 3x^(m+1)-3x+1=0 (Broomhead et al. 2004). For m=2, lambda_2=(sqrt(5)-1)/2 is the reciprocal of the golden ratio, and the Hausdorff dimension is 1.9306354.... As m->infty, lambda_m->1/2 and the dimensions tend to ln3/ln2, the dimension of the Sierpiński sieve.
