Gauss Sphere Problem

The Gauss sphere problem concerns the error in counting integer lattice points in a three-dimensional ball. If S(R) counts the triples (x,y,z) in Z^3 with x^2+y^2+z^2<=R^2, the main term is the volume 4piR^3/3. The problem is to bound the difference between the count and this main term.

Bellotti and Kerr (2026) proved that, for every epsilon>0,

 S(R)=(4pi)/3R^3+O_epsilon(R^(55/42+epsilon)).

Here O denotes big-O notation. This improves the earlier exponent 21/16 of Heath-Brown (Bellotti and Kerr 2026), since 21/16-55/42=1/336.

Bellotti and Kerr (2026) also report the smaller exponent 2274811/1743872 using OpenAI's announced 7/8-quasi-generalized Riemann hypothesis result, a zero-free half-plane Res>7/8 for Dirichlet L-series. That estimate depends on the announced result and is separate from their unconditional exponent 55/42.
