Fox Derivative

The Fox derivative is the Z-linear function partial/partialx_i from the integral group ring of a free group to itself specified on the generators by partialx_j/partialx_i=delta_(ij) and on products of group elements u and v by partial(uv)/partialx_i=partialu/partialx_i+upartialv/partialx_i. Here delta_(ij) is the Kronecker delta, and the derivative is extended to the group ring by Z-linearity. Fox derivatives turn group presentations into matrices used to compute Alexander invariants.
