Distance Set

The distance set of a subset E of Euclidean space is the set of distances between pairs of its points,

 Delta(E)={||x-y||:x,y in E},

where ||·|| is the Euclidean norm. The Falconer distance conjecture relates the Lebesgue measure of this set to the Hausdorff dimension of E.

Iosevich and Yavicoli (2026) proved that there is an absolute constant eta_0>0 such that every analytic set E subset= R^2 of Hausdorff dimension greater than one satisfies

 dim_HDelta(E)>=4/5+eta_0.

Here analytic means a continuous image of a Borel set in a complete separable metric space. This improves the uniform lower bound without establishing positive Lebesgue measure.

OpenAI (2026a) announced positive Lebesgue measure of Delta(E) whenever E subset= R^d is a compact set with Hausdorff dimension greater than d/2, for every integer d>=2. This is the asserted conclusion of the Falconer distance conjecture with its strict dimension threshold. The release proofs have not been independently verified here.
