Direct Variation


Two quantities x and y exhibit direct variation if they are related by a nonzero constant of variation k such that

 y=kx.

Equivalently, y/x=k for x!=0, and y is directly proportional to x. Thus multiplying x by a factor also multiplies y by the same factor. The function graph of a direct variation is a straight line through the origin with slope k (OpenStax 2021).
