Decay Constant


The decay constant lambda of a quantity undergoing exponential decay is the positive constant in

 N(t)=N_0e^(-lambdat).

Equivalently, N satisfies the ordinary differential equation N^'(t)=-lambdaN(t). The reciprocal tau=1/lambda is the characteristic decay time, namely the time over which the exponential factor decreases by a factor of e. The half-life is

 t_(1/2)=(ln2)/lambda=tauln2.
