Cronbach's Alpha


Cronbach's alpha, also called coefficient alpha, is a statistic used to measure the internal consistency of a collection of test or questionnaire items. For k items, let X_i be the score recorded for item i and let X=X_1+X_2+...+X_k be the composite total score. Writing sigma_i^2 and sigma_X^2 for the corresponding variances, Cronbach's alpha is

 alpha=k/(k-1)(1-(sum_(i=1)^(k)sigma_i^2)/(sigma_X^2)).

The coefficient increases when the items have larger positive covariances relative to their individual variances. Its value depends both on the relationships among the items and on the number of items, so a high value alone does not establish that all items measure a single underlying quantity.
