Correlation Length

A correlation length is a spatial scale extracted from the decay of a correlation function. For a nonnegative lattice correlation C(r) along a coordinate axis, the exponential correlation length is xi=1/m, where

 m=-lim_(r->infty)(lnC(r))/r,

provided the limit exists and is positive. A different convention is the second-moment correlation length. For a summable translation-invariant correlation C(x) on Z^d, with positive susceptibility chi=sum_(x)C(x) and finite second moment, it is

 xi_2^2=1/(2dchi)sum_(x in Z^d)||x||^2C(x).

These two definitions need not give the same value.
