Constructible Universe

The constructible universe L is the class of sets obtained by iterating definability along the ordinal numbers. If Def(M) denotes the subsets of M definable over (M, in ) by first-order logic formulas with parameters from M, the constructible hierarchy is

L_0=emptyset
(1)
L_(alpha+1)=Def(L_alpha)
(2)
L_lambda= union _(alpha<lambda)L_alpha,
(3)

where lambda is a limit ordinal. The constructible universe is the proper class

 L= union _(alpha in Ord)L_alpha,
(4)

where Ord is the class of all ordinal numbers. The axiom of constructibility V=L asserts that every set belongs to L (Müller and Sargsyan 2025).
