CP-Rank

The CP-rank of a completely positive matrix A is the least number of columns of a matrix B with nonnegative entries such that A=BB^T. Here, B^T is the transpose of B. The CP-rank is also called the factorization index and is generally different from the ordinary matrix rank. The CP-rank of the zero matrix is defined to be 0.

Let p_n be the largest CP-rank of an n×n completely positive matrix. Lavi (2026) proved a lower bound which, together with the known upper bound, gives

 (n(n-3))/2-epsilon_n<=p_n<=(n+1; 2)-4

for n>=5, where epsilon_n=0 for odd n and epsilon_n=1 for even n. Consequently,

 p_n=(n^2)/2+O(n).
