Artin Group

An Artin group of finite rank is a group defined by a Coxeter matrix M=(m_(st)) on a finite set S. It has generators a_s for s in S. For distinct s,t with m_(st)<infty, its defining relation equates the alternating words a_sa_ta_s... and a_ta_sa_t... of length m_(st). The value m_(st)=infty imposes no relation between that pair. For m_(st)=2 the generators commute, while m_(st)=3 gives a_sa_ta_s=a_ta_sa_t. Adding the relations a_s^2=1 gives the associated Coxeter group.

For example, a graph path of n-1 generators, with label 3 between adjacent generators and label 2 between other pairs, defines the braid group B_n. The standard topological model is the Artin Salvetti complex, whose asphericity is the Artin K(pi,1) conjecture.

A metric space is proper when every closed bounded subset is compact.
