Ambro-Kawamata Effective Nonvanishing Conjecture

The Ambro-Kawamata effective nonvanishing conjecture predicts the existence of nonzero global sections under positivity assumptions on a Cartier divisor and its difference from a canonical divisor. In its smooth boundary-free case, X is a smooth complex projective algebraic variety, K_X is a canonical divisor, D is a Cartier divisor, and the assumptions are that D and D-K_X are nef divisors and that D-K_X is big. The conclusion is H^0(X,O_X(D))!=0.

Ajit (2026) reported a smooth projective four-dimensional counterexample Y with D semiample and big, D-K_Y basepoint-free and big, and H^0(Y,O_Y(D))=0. The construction starts with a quotient X with terminal singularities of the fourth power of an elliptic curve by an action of order 3. On X, both D and D-K_X are ample, 3K_X∼0, and D^4=72. Moreover,

 h^0(X,O_X(mD))=3(m^4-1)

for every integer m>=1. In particular, the first multiple has no section even though higher multiples do. The reported counterexample has not been independently verified here.
